Ten Reasons to Follow Your Travel Dreams

Are you one of those people who has a bucket list of travel dreams, but you never seem to take the steps to make them happen? Maybe you’re worried about the cost, or you don’t think you have enough time. But what if I told you that there are plenty of reasons to follow your travel dreams, even if they seem daunting at first?

10 Reasons To Take The Plunge And Go Explore The World

It doesn’t matter what brought you to this page, whether it be a wanderlusty desire for excitement, an urge to further the knowledge of self and the world around you or simply a burning question that needs answering. Whatever your motivation is, I’m here to tell you why traveling is not only important but necessary. Here are 10 reasons to follow your travel dreams.

1. Travel is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer

In a society where money is often tight and financial security an ever-present wish for most, traveling has remained one of the few things we still cannot (easily) buy with money and as such has retained its place at the top of our wish list. A friend of mine recently told me about a quote from an english author, I think it was Stephen Fry but my memory is not up to scratch and I’m too lazy to check , “The one thing you can’t buy with money, is experience”, and in today’s world where we are constantly surrounded by consumerism encouraging us to “buy buy buy!”, I think it’s important to remember that experience is the one thing money can’t buy.

2. Traveling changes your life by changing you as a person

Travel has been shown to broaden horizons, fuel creativity and release serotonin in the brain not only making you happier but also better adjusted! People who travel are more open-minded and well rounded, the world becomes their oyster and they become explorers of both worlds and people. Travel can make you a better person in countless ways whether it’s simply by broadening your perspective or giving you the confidence to try new things -life skills that will undoubtedly benefit you when faced with challenges at home.

3. Traveling allows you to discover who you really are

The road offers a lot of opportunities to reflect on yourself and your place in the world. Travel forces you to take a look at who you have been, where you want to go and what is important to you. It reveals sides of yourself that will surprise both others and yourself, forcing introspection even if you didn’t know you needed it.

4. Traveling lets you meet the world and the people there

While travel is about discovering who you are, it’s also about understanding those around you. By traveling to another country or culture not only do we learn more about ourselves but we gain a better understanding of our neighbour and in turn, a better understanding of our planet. The world is a very small place and it’s easier than ever to travel nowadays, there are no good excuses for not exploring the world beyond your backyard.

5. Traveling gives you an education that can never be bought

As far as I’m concerned, travel itself is its own reward but there are also some other pretty amazing side effects. People who travel get smarter because they get to see more points of view and have access to a variety of knowledge brought from different parts of the world , they become bilingual or learn another language altogether and this enriches their lives in every aspect even back home! There are so many opportunities available to those willing to step out their front and explore what lies beyond, you can teach yourself anything from a new language to how to fix your car, if you’re willing to put the effort in and travel will give you the tools to do so.

6. Traveling gives you a sense of community and belonging

There’s nothing like returning “home” after weeks away and finding you’re not as alone as you felt. A familiar face or two may greet us when we return but it takes time to re-discover your place within that world and find out who has been keeping up with all those awkward office jokes while we’ve been away. Meanwhile, traveling brings an instant sense of community wherever we go because there are only fellow travelers around us offering friendship on a level few others can understand. You become family with your fellow travelers.

7. Traveling shows us that we can do anything

Many people dream of a happier and better life but fear holds them back from doing anything about it. Many people give in to this fear and become victims of their circumstances, convinced that they cannot escape it until something extraordinary happens (and even then only if the “something” involves saving someone’s life or winning the lottery). For many of us though, there is nothing holding us back but ourselves. We own our lives and no matter how bad things get, there will always be someone who has had to struggle more than you and still managed to succeed (the internet is full of these wonderful success stories!). The world is big enough for all of us, not everyone can travel but everyone should have the chance to at least try.

8. Traveling makes you a better person

For one reason or another, a lot of people believe that traveling is an activity reserved for rich people and that’s not at all true. The beauty of travel lies in its unpredictability, it can be done on any budget from “time” to “money”. In fact all over the world there are organizations who offer sponsored opportunities for young travelers, whether it be volunteering their time to assist locals with building projects or going on free tours in exchange for helping out around the hostel, it’s possible to see a lot of different places without spending too much money if you’re willing to work hard and get creative. Even taking a year off between high school and college to backpack around the world can do wonders for your future. I’m not suggesting that everyone should drop out of university or school in general anymore than I’m saying you have to agree with me on politics or religion but you’ll be amazed at how good it feels when you listen to yourself!

9. Traveling makes life richer

By traveling, we broaden our horizons so much so that upon returning home everything seems a little different and new again. For instance, take my friend Kim who went from hating pasta before she moved to Italy (I mean really hated it!) to now preferring spaghetti over steak every time she comes back home! And Kim’s not alone, almost everyone has noticed how their tastes have changed after their travels. The point is, travel opens our eyes to the world around us and how much better it can be once we take a bit of time off to soak it all in!

10. Traveling helps you get rid of What-Ifs

This one seems very personal so everyone will have their own way of looking at it but for me, traveling has helped me get over some difficult “what-ifs”and I’m not alone in that regard. It’s hard to explain but what life would have been like if I’d gone somewhere else or done something different isn’t as important anymore because I already did it. Once I made my choices, even if they were bad ones, they are still mine which means there is a lesson in them for me. The past can’t be changed, all we have is the present and I’m not going to waste it doing what-ifs when I could improve my life by going out there and living every day as if it was a dream.

The world is a big place. And if you’re not taking the plunge and exploring, then what are you waiting for? You don’t need to be an expert on how to travel or where to go – just take that first step! No one has ever regretted following their dreams and we know you won’t regret it either.
